A successful Wall Street trader earning millions of dollars suddenly decides to leave her luxurious lifestyle behind to become an educator. Sounds crazy? Well, that’s exactly what Tram Anh Nguyen did back in 2017, and it turned out to be one of the smartest business moves in the education world.
The Trader Who Saw Tomorrow
Tram Anh spent 18 years in traditional finance, working as one of the few female capital markets traders at Standard Chartered in New York during the early 2000s. She was making good money, loved the fast-paced environment, and was successful at what she did. But here’s the thing – she spotted something that would change everything.
While finance professionals like herself were performing well in their traditional roles, they had little understanding of the new technologies that were starting to reshape the industry. Blockchain, fintech innovations, and digital finance were emerging, but there was nowhere to learn about them. Universities weren’t teaching these subjects yet, and professionals were being left behind.
That gap? That was her golden opportunity.
Building Something That Didn’t Exist
In 2017, Tram Anh co-founded the Center for Finance, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (CFT) – what she calls “the world’s first fintech online educational platform.” But getting started wasn’t easy.
The biggest challenge? Nobody really believed in online education for finance back then. People were skeptical about whether you could actually learn complex financial concepts through a screen. There were no industry leaders willing to teach, no alumni to showcase, and certainly no brand recognition.
But Tram Anh had a secret weapon: her network and her persistence.
She reached out to CEOs of major fintech companies, including Anne Boden, the CEO of Starling Bank (one of the UK’s largest online banking platforms). When she asked Anne to teach on her platform, the response was immediate: “Yes, I believe in online education. I really believe that we can make knowledge available to everyone.”
That first “yes” opened the floodgates. Today, CFT has over 1,000 industry leaders teaching on their platform.
The Numbers That Tell the Story
What started as an idea to bridge a knowledge gap has grown into something remarkable:
- 260,000 professionals from around the world are now part of CFT’s community
- 1,000+ industry experts teach on the platform
- Students come from every continent, democratizing access to cutting-edge financial education
- The platform works with central banks, regulators, and major financial institutions globally
But here’s what makes CFT different from traditional education – it’s not just about learning theory. Students are implementing what they learn immediately in their jobs, seeing real results within two to three years.
The Skills That Matter Most
Through her work, Tram Anh has identified what she calls the “SHIME Framework” – five essential skills anyone needs to thrive in today’s world:
S – Soft Skills: Communication, teamwork, and interpersonal abilities that make you human, not robotic.
H – Hard Skills: Technical expertise in your field, whether that’s coding, AI, or any specialized knowledge.
I – Industry Knowledge: Understanding what’s happening in your industry globally, not just in your local market.
M – Mindset: Developing an entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving and adaptability.
E – Experience: Getting hands-on experience with innovation, whether through internships, advising startups, or working with new technologies.
Solving the AI Job Challenge
Here’s where things get really interesting. While many people worry that AI will steal jobs, Tram Anh’s research tells a different story. She co-authored a massive study analyzing 40,000 new jobs in fintech and discovered something surprising.
According to the World Economic Forum, AI could displace around 85 million jobs by 2025, but it will also create 97 million new ones. The key is understanding how to work with AI, not against it.
Tram Anh sees three types of workers emerging:
- Those facing displacement – people whose jobs become fully automated
- The supercharged workforce – professionals who learn to collaborate with AI and become much more productive
- Creative disruptors – people who use AI to completely reimagine their roles and create entirely new opportunities
The goal is moving people from category one to categories two and three.
Making Education Accessible
One of the most impressive aspects of CFT’s work is its global partnerships. Take Singapore, for example. Tram Anh partnered with the Monetary Authority of Singapore to create curriculum for the entire country’s banking sector. The government recognized that if they didn’t equip their workforce with digital finance skills, they wouldn’t be able to compete globally.
This approach – working with entire countries and organizations rather than just individuals – is what allows CFT to create large-scale change.
The Woman Leading Women in AI
Beyond CFT, Tram Anh recently became the chairwoman of Global Women in AI, an initiative focused on ensuring women don’t just participate in the AI revolution, but actually shape it. Her message is clear: AI is influencing every industry, and for this transformation to serve humanity, it must reflect the diversity of humanity.
She’s particularly passionate about this because when she started trading in the early 2000s, she was often the only woman in the room. Now, she’s working to make sure the next generation of women don’t face the same barriers.
What This Means for You
Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting your career, Tram Anh’s story offers some powerful lessons
Technology makes starting easier than ever. When she started CFT eight years ago, the technology costs would have been in the millions. Today, those same tools cost almost nothing.
Global thinking is essential. Success comes from understanding what’s happening worldwide, not just in your local market.
Continuous learning isn’t optional. The world is changing so fast that what you knew last year might already be outdated.
Collaboration beats competition. Building networks and meaningful relationships with people globally can open doors you never imagined.
The Future is Now
CFT isn’t stopping. They’re expanding their global reach, launching new programs, and working with more governments and organizations. The goal remains the same: making learning accessible, practical, and empowering for everyone.
As Tram Anh puts it, “The future of AI will be written by those who dare to dream, to learn, and to lead. We cannot afford to leave anyone behind.”
Her journey from Wall Street trader to global education entrepreneur proves that sometimes the biggest career risks lead to the most meaningful rewards. By identifying a gap that others couldn’t see and having the courage to build a solution, she’s not just changed her own life – she’s changing how the world learns about technology and finance.
The question isn’t whether technology will continue to reshape our world. It’s whether you’ll be ready to shape it back.
