How To Control World Plastic Pollution | Plastic Pollution Awareness - Business Narrative

When passion meets purpose, innovation happens and few embody that better than Mariam Ispahani, CEO of Sonali Bioplastics. In her conversation on The Business Narrative Podcast, Mariam shared how her deep respect for nature and her global upbringing led her to build a company tackling one of the world’s biggest challenges: plastic pollution.

From Silicon Valley to Sustainability

Before founding Sonali Bioplastics, Mariam worked in the semiconductor industry in Silicon Valley. But her lifelong concern for the environment inspired a career pivot first into solar energy, and later into bioplastics.
“I was raised to care about nature,” she said. “It’s not about rejecting all plastics it’s about rethinking how we use them.”

Rethinking Plastics, One Innovation at a Time

At Sonali Bioplastics, Mariam’s team focuses on compostable and biodegradable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics. Their products are designed for both rigid and flexible packaging, giving manufacturers real options to reduce environmental waste.
Her company has successfully completed pilot projects in Europe, where strong sustainability policies have encouraged eco-friendly innovation. Requests have also come from Asia and Africa, highlighting global interest in green alternatives.

The Challenge of Scaling Sustainability

Building a green business isn’t without its hurdles. Mariam candidly discussed the financial barriers faced by startups in the climate tech space especially the high cost of machinery.
“Everything so far has been self-funded,” she explained. “From personal savings to reinvesting previous startup earnings it’s been a journey of perseverance.”
Despite these challenges, Sonali Bioplastics continues to seek partnerships, grants, and collaborations to scale sustainably.

Empowering the Next Generation

Mariam believes that the fight against climate change depends on youth engagement. She actively works with student groups and young activists to raise awareness and promote behavioral change.
“When young people see the impact of single-use plastics firsthand, they begin to act differently,” she noted. “That’s where real change begins.”

Merging AI and Climate Tech

Looking to the future, Mariam envisions Artificial Intelligence playing a key role in climate solutions — from manufacturing optimization to sustainable digital operations. She’s already completed certifications in AI and green digital technologies, aiming to integrate smart, eco-friendly systems into Sonali Bioplastics’ operations.

Her Message to Entrepreneurs

Mariam’s advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is simple but powerful:
“Don’t feel alone. Network with others who share your mindset. Competition is healthy, but collaboration is stronger.”
